On April 8th, Western Pennsylvania played host to a solar eclipse, and the Radiation Oncology staff at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Horizon – Shenango Valley wanted patients to be able to participate. With support from the Horizon Foundation’s Patient Experience Fund, staff arranged to provide eclipse-themed food and decorations to the day’s visitors.
Melissa Nanz, Chief Radiation Therapist, shared that the Hillman team provided treats included “all things cosmic,” such as moon pies, cosmic brownies, star crunch, and a specially designed eclipse cake and cupcakes. “The patients thoroughly enjoyed celebrating with us!” Staff and patients received eclipse glasses which they used to observe the phenomenon.
The Patient Experience Fund provides care and support for patients at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Centers at UPMC Horizon, alongside the Dr. Edgardo Lob Memorial Cancer Care Fund and the Jameson Junior Guild Fund. Together, these funds help meet patient needs and ease the challenges of receiving treatment.
