The UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation would like to thank the group of 2nd year Physical Therapist Assistant students from Penn State Shenango who recently participated in a workday at the Medical Equipment Recycling Program at our Farrell location. The students are part of the Physical Therapist Assistant Club. As part of the club’s activities for the year, the students assist others through community service. They spent the day assisting staff by cleaning equipment, sweeping and mopping floors, and working on wheelchairs.
Gizelle Dean, the club director, shared this:
“These particular students chose the MERP opportunity, which correlates well with physical therapy practice and patient needs. One of the “Core Values” for the physical therapist assistant is “Social Responsibility.” The American Physical Therapy Association defines social responsibility as the promotion of a mutual trust between the profession and the larger public that necessitates responding to societal needs for health and wellness. One of the purposes of the club is to develop student leadership qualities and fellowship fostering a cooperative spirit among students enrolled in the PTA program. We thought the MERP opportunity complemented both the purpose of the club and the core values.”
