The UPMC Horizon & Jameson Foundations are pleased to support UPMC’s Minutes Matter campaign in an effort to provide community members with access to basic emergency information and education about life-saving interventions. The initiative is now available to local residents and provides Mercer and Lawrence County communities with education and information on how to handle the first few minutes of a cardiac event, opioid overdose, mental health crisis, or uncontrolled bleeding emergency.
Recently, UPMC Horizon and UPMC Jameson partnered with the City of Hermitage to host a Minutes Matter open forum training session at LindenPointe in Hermitage. The session was open to area residents and provided opportunities to practice CPR, see how an automated external defibrillator works, learn about naloxone administration for overdoses, and learn techniques to help control bleeding.
Minutes Matter training events are provided by trained healthcare professionals and are composed of hands-on learning opportunities for community members to understand and practice the key points of handling the first few minutes of the emergencies described above. Minutes Matter training can be completed with a variety of age groups, including middle- to high-school age students.
Training can take as little as twenty minutes to complete and includes a cardiac event station which reviews hands-only CPR and AED usage, provides information on administrating Narcan for opioid overdoses, and demonstrates how to identify signs of a mental health crisis and contact a crisis line. Additionally, participants can practice techniques used to stop bleeding such as wound packing and tourniquet application. Each element of training allows participants to interact with a UPMC trainer to discuss techniques and ask questions.
The next scheduled Minutes Matter Training Forum for Community Members will be held on Monday, April 29th, 2024 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hope Center for Arts and Technology, Inc. 115 Anson Way, Sharon, PA 16146. This forum is free and open to the public.
Minutes Matter can also be scheduled for businesses and organizations. For more information regarding the Minutes Matter initiative and training events, visit minutesmatter.upmc.com. If you have questions or are interested in scheduling training, contact Michele Albaugh at albaughml@upmc.edu.
