The UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation is proud to announce the creation of the Kirk L. Works, M.D. Memorial Scholarship and the selection of its first recipients. The scholarship was created in honor of Dr. Works, who was a longtime gastroenterologist in Mercer County who passed away in 2022. Dr. Works was admired by patients and colleagues alike for his kindness, compassion, intelligence and respect for those he interacted with. He was dedicated to the communities and people he served and valued higher education. His scholarship provides support for graduates of Mercer County, PA high schools who are pursuing higher education in a health care related field.
Three 2023 Mercer County high school graduates were selected to receive a scholarship from a competitive pool of applicants. Tamera Slater is a graduate of Farrell High School and will attend Slippery Rock University, where she will become a Biology major and participate in the accelerated Physician’s Assistant Program. Josilyn Pfaff graduated from Jamestown High School and intends to attend the University of Mount Union, where she will pursue a Nursing degree. Jenna Al-kuhali is a graduate of Hermitage High School and plans to attend Youngstown State University to pursue her Biology degree on the pre-med track. Tamera and Josilyn had the opportunity to meet with Mary Ann Works and Marissa Works to receive their scholarship certificates and learn more about Dr. Works and his legacy.
